TIDAL WAVES.
DAMAGE TO A STEAMER. By Telegraph. — Press Association.—Copyright, ADELAIDE, 20th May. The Anglo-Australasian S.M. Company's steamer Port Chalmeis, 4077 tons gross, from London, reports that after rounding the Cape, she struck a tidal wave, which crashed on to thedeck with terrific force. Great damage was done. Conditions continued disturbed until tho steamer was within two days of reaching Australia. Oil was used to Calm the waters. EXTRAORDINARY TIDES. A TRYING TIME. SYDNEY, 20th May. During extraordinary high tides at Alladulla a few days ago. the water, with startling suddenness, broke right over the wharf, doing much damage. The mooring ropes of the- steamer Eden (693 tons gro&s) broke, and th© vessel, to save herself, had to steam out. She had) a. trying time, sometimes almost standing on end.
