LYALL BAY LAND.
TRUSTEES AND CITY COUNCIL. NEGOTIATIONS TO PEOCEED. The City Council, at a special meeting yesterday afternoon, decided to continue negotiations with the trustees of the Ciawford estate for the purchase from them of 24 acres of land at the east end of Lyall Bay. A sub-committee was appointed to coaifer with tho trustees and report later to the council. The earliei stages of the negotiations 'resulted in an oner by tho trustees of 24 acres at £180 an acre, with certain provisions as to access. Tho council decided at a previous special meeting to oifer £3500 for the full area unconditionally. This the trustees refused. The question of access ivas apparently the main obstacle to a satisfactory agreement. The proposal as made by the trustees provided for the continuation of a chainwide road ilong the beach, and the deduction also of sufficient area lor t^o roads to intersect the land between the beach road and the property reserved by the trustee.^, who were not to be responsible for the formation of these av.ce<« roads. Tfiey expressed their willingness to make the access by areas, say, twenty feet wide, and leave the determination of tho traffic to be permitted to i.he council. Councillor Moirah moved that the offer of the trustees be accepted, subject to tne condition that the formation, of iho .street*; da-sired by the vendors should be carried out at the vendors' expense, but the motion wa? lost, and the council decided to make the unconditional oifcr since refused by the truste*s..
