\ OBSERVATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH. [BY TELEGRAPH — PRUS3 ASSOCIATION.] CHUJSTCHURCH, This Day. Ob. c eivations oi' ths *un to-day at Canterbury Collegn Observatory in rpi fereme to the transit of Hallcy's comet were rcsultlsss. A wpll-definod sun-spot group was in evidcnco I hen, but thenj was no trace of the comet. In regard to the passage of the earththrough the tail of the comet, the results so far are l-egalive, and magnetic observations, which may possibly prove interesting, are not yet reported. The sky has been partially tovero'l with clouds, ;>nd a continuous view of the sun is not possible. Tfie weather is hazy, but not unusually so. But for the predictions of astronomei.s. no one in Wellington would have suspected that the transit was taking place this afternoon. Light clouds passed at frequent intervals across the sun, but not enough to spoil the view. Nothing unusual was noted. All danger of lurther slipping of the clay bank at the back of Barlett's Hotel seems to have parsed. Preparations for safeguarding the foundations of the building above the scene of the collapse were advancing rapidly to-day. In the paiagraph published in The Post referring to the burial of the unknown or unclaimed victims of the Penguin wreck in the Kaiori Cemetery, we omitted to mention that the Union Steam Ship Company shared the tost with the Government, bearing the greater part. The City Council piovided the burial ground. Mr. Justice Cooper heard to-day a case adjourned from Blenheim. It was concerned with the validity of tertaiii Ist ters patent granted to one Win. Dalzieii tor an impioved hay press. DalzHl sued W. Benoni Parker tor infringment of patent lights in using a machine on similar lines to one of his own manufacture.
