MINING NEWS. ♦ WAITANGI GOLDMINING CO. Messrs. T. Shailer Weston and Hemingway, who are at present in Auckland in connection with a meeting of the directors of the Waitangi Goldmining Company, telegraphed to Wellington today that the directors had accepted the offer of Messrs. Bewicke, Moreing and Co. to take over the management of the .Waitangi property. Under this arrangement Mr. Stansfield, manager of the Talisman mine, will be in charge of the mine, and a local manager will be appointed to act under his direction. The preponderating interest in the company is held in Wellington, and the new arrangement is in full accordance with shareholders' wishes. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. » Having been brought back from Australia yes-terday on a warrant, a. young man named N Jack M'Kenzie Hay appeared before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., to-day, charged with failing to provide maintenance for his illegitimate child. On the application of Mr. P. W. Jackton he w.is remanded till the 27, th iust. Bail was fixed at £50 and one surety of a like amount. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for informant. An articled seaman of the s.s. TokoTnauu named Patrick Barry pleaded not 'guilty to a. charge of having absented himself from the vessel without leave. He did not wish to give evidence in de fence. A fine of 20s was inflicted, with Ihe alternative of 48 hours' impmonmenf. Two charges of being an idle and 'disorderly person, were preferred against a man named Robert Stewart. On 3 allegation was that he habitually consorted with woniev of ill repute, and the second wa^ that he had insufficient lawful means of suppoit. Accused pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by the police, accused's rebuttal of which was considered unsatisfactory. He was sentenced to three months- imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. For intemperance, James Collingwocd wii-o fined 10s, in default 48 houi^' imprisonment. Two other individuals, charged with insobriety, appealed. One was convicted and discharged, and the other v.ab fined ss, with the usual alternative. At the Mount Cook Police Court this morning, before Mr. J. Lachman, J.P., the following cases of drunkenness were dealt with: — Henry Greenfield, Thomas Scott, und Alexander Si rimgeour, vcre each fined ss. with an option of 24 hours' impri&oument, and Joseph Barxet and one hi. ff t-,offender were each fined 10s, or ordered to serve 48 hours' 'imprisonment. Francis Martin was fined 40s, the alternative being fixed at 14 days in gaol, while James Tray, an old offender, was convicted and discharged^ David Morribon, who was arrested for drunkenness, v.at remanded to the 26th instant for medical tieatment. Representatives of butter factories, 'dairy farmers, and others interested in the industry are, at Ihe invitation of the Minister of Agriculture (Hon T. Mackenzie), holding a conference at Wellington to consider what are the best steps to take for the pasteurisation of skim milk and whey before it is returned to the settlers for consumption by calves and pigs. The conference is not open to the press. It is understood, however, that the subject was fully discussed, and the discussion will serve the useful purpose of preparing' the representatives of the industry for a proper presentation of the latest information regarding it at the Dairy Conference at the National Dairy Show. The electric light fittings at the Wind bo. Billiard Saloon, opened last night in Willis-street, were carried jut by Messrs. Cederholm and Tolley. Andras, a debt of £2 2s, defendant was ordered to pay the amount on or before 2nd June, or in default, spend two days in prison. Orders were refused in .each of the following cases:— Wellington Publishing Company v. John H. Baker, a debt of £5 4s 6d, and the same v. John H. Evans, a debt of £24 Is 4d. CLAIM FOR WAGES. Christopher Bentley, gardener, sued John Melville for £2 7s, wages alleged to be owing. Plaintiff stated that he had been engaged by defendant to do three weeks' work in a garden at £1 per week, and that he had only received 12s. Defendant argued that plaintiff had not done three weeks' work, and that there \vas no arrangement concerning wages. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £1 12s 3d, being at the rate of 15s per week, plus 6s costs. The annual meeting of the Boards of Examiners under the Mining Act and the Coal-mines Act aie being held in Wellington to-day. The members present arc:— Messrs. H. A. Gordon (Auckland), H. B.
