TEACHERS' SALARIES.
" FEMALE TEACHERS WRETCHEDLY PAID.". I The teaching profession does not appear to be a very remunerative one, considering the high qualifications necessary in the case of assistant masters and mistresses in secondary schools in New Zealand. An interesting table was included in the annual report of the New Zea.land Secondary School Assistants' Association, which was adopted yesterday. The information was gathered from most of the principal schools, and was prepared in connection with the superannuation scheme. It was tabulated, to show the ages of teachers and the salaries they received, together with the number of teacheTs of both sexes in receipt of such salaries. The returns were as follow :— Under 21 years of age : One male and one female teacher receiving £100 per annum. From 21 years to 40 : Three female teachers, £100; 18 male and 40 female teachers, £100 to £200; 13 male teachers, £201 to £250; 12 males, £251 to £300; two male teachers over £300. From 41 years to 50 : Three male and three female teachers, £201 to £250; seven male teachers. £251 to £250; ove>. £300, two male teachers. From 51 years to 60 : One male teacher, £251 to £300. Over 60 years : One male- teacher, £251 to £300. The most noticeable feature in these figures, the report stated, was that female teachers were "wretchedly paid," and that male assistants seem to have but little chance of reaching the retiring age. Only three were aged between 51 and 60, and only one was over 60 years of age. In the evening the question of salaries was discussed, and the following resolution was carried :—: — "That, in the opinion of this association, the amount per head available for secondary education is insufficient to pay adequate salaries for 'the work done, or to encourage the best teachers to take up secondary as a career in life."
