" ' ♦ SIR WILLIAM HUGGINS. By Telegraph. — Press Association. — Copyright (Received May 13, 1.40 p.m.) LONDON, 12th May. Sir William Huggins, the astronomer, is dead. Sir William Hugging X.C.8., 0.M., F.R.S., D.C.L., LL.D., Ph.D., D.Sc, was born in London in 1824. He built a private observatory at Tulse Hill in 1856, and devoted himself to the development 01 spectros-copic astronomy. For his work he received medals from the Royal Society (of which for a time he was the president) and the Royal Astronomical Society ; also seveial prizes from France. Many original papers written by nim have been published.
