In connection with the keen competition between United States and Canadian transport routes for the east-bound grain traffic from the Canadian northwest, a reduction of the water rate to Montreal to 4^ cents makes the rate from Fort William (the Canadian grainshipping port on Lake Ontario) to Liverpool, via Montreal, 8.13 cents a bushel, compared with 8.52 cents by the BuffaloNew York route. The Canadian companies have all their May space booked, and Montreal is expected to become the leading ocean port for outbound grain.

This morning the Minister of Edunt tion (Hon. G. Fern Ids) vab interviewed by Messrs. F. Pirani (chairman), Outline. and Bennett. of the Wangpnui Kcaitation Board relative to various mati-ers of administration. The proceedings were not open to the press. The Minister promised to give earlj and careful attention to the representations of the deputation.
