Brown and Co., Ltd., shipbuilders, of Clydebank, have received an order from the Orient Company for a new steamer. The vessel, which will replace the R.M.S. Ophir in the Australian mail service, is to be an improvement on her predecessors. She will have a length of 550 ft, and her tonnage will approximate 13,000. A leading feature will be the passenger accommodation, and as the company recognises the growing requirements of Australian trade, there will be extensive cargo space. The new steamer should be ready for service about September of next year, and she will be the sixth vessel for the Commonwealth mail service, the Orsova, Otway, Osterley, Otranto, and Orvieto being the present vessels. MAITAI, FROM SYDNEY. An account of the Maitai's rough trip from Sydney appears elsewhere. The Maitai leaves this evening for southern ports, Hobart, and Melbourne. INDRANI LEFT NEW YORK. Cable advice lias been received of the departure of the A. and A. steamer Indrani from New York on 4th inst. The vessel, which is expected to arrive here about the 31st of July, calls at Melbourne and Launceston en route. MOKOIA, FROM THE ISLANDS. At 6.15 a.m. to-day the Island steamer Mokoia arrived in jthe stream from Papeete (Tahiti) and Rarotooga, and after clearance by the port health officer, the vessel wa's berthed at No. 6, Queen's- Wharf, at 8.40. Mr. M. P. Caffln, purser, reports that the vessel had an uneventful passage. After leaving Wellington on the 21st April, strong north-west winds were experienced, with a fair sea and showery weather, these conditions lasting till the 25th. Fine, clear weather then lasted till arrival at Rarotonga nt 8.15 a.m. on the 27th, and departure was taken for Papeete at 4.30 p.m. the same day. A fine weather run brought the Mokoia to the French settlement at 6.30 a.m. on the 30th. Passengers, mails, and cargo were ex- | changed with the Mariposa, from and for i San Francisco, and after loading the Mokoia ! left for Rarotonga at 2 p.m. on the Ist J inst. She arrived off the Islands at 4 p.m. on 1 the 3rd, but a strong N.W. wind and heavy sea prevented safe approach, and the vessel stood out to sea again. The wind then veered to the southward, and the Mokoia anchored at 3 a.m. on the 4th. Fruit was loaded, and departure was taken for Wellington at 8.10 p.m. the same day. Moderate south-east winds prevailed till Monday, thence light north-easterlies with overcast misty weather till arrival at Wellington this morning. Cargo brought by the vessel is as follows :— 2991 cases and 100 kits bananas, 4860 cases oranges, 149 sacks copra, 20 sacks coconuts, 29 casks oil, 42 cases pearl shell. 50 cases paints, etc., 25 cases vanilla, and 64 packages) sundries. On discharge at Wellington the Mokoia will go southward to enter temporarily in the Dunedin- Auckland-East Coast service in place of the Monowai. SALE OF THE ALAMEDA. Advice was brought by the Mokoia to-day to the effect that the Oceanic Steam Ship Company (the Spreckels Line), of San Francisco, has disposed of its bteamer Alamedsi to the Alaska Packers' Association, which will henceforth employ the vessel in its San Fran-cisco-Alaskan services. Her place in the San Francisco-Honolulu trade is being taken by the. Sierra. The Alameda has been a well-known mail and passenger liner on the Pacific Ocean for many years. She was built in 1883 at the yards of W. Cramp and Sons, of Philadelphia, and is of 3158 tons gross and 1939 net, with dimensions 314 ft by 41ft by 17.3 ft. The vessel was for a considerable time engaged in the San Francisco-Auckland-Sydney mail service, in conjunction with the Mariposa and the Moana. She burns liquid fuel, and is fitted with electric light. The Alaska Packers Association owns a fleet of about thirty-eight vessels of various tonnage. The Alameda will now be one of its largest boats. The Daily Commercial News, of Sydney, publishes a report to the effect that the steamer Moura has been disposed of by the Union Steam Ship Company to a firm in Vancouver. This report has heen current in Wellington for some time past, but it lacks confirmation. "The Moura is not sold," was the assurance given to a Post reporter to-day by •the Union Company authorities. Mr. Shaw, purser of the Manuka, accompanied that vessel on the run to Vancouver Mr. W. Ewan joined the Maitai as purser in Sydney, and is proceeding to Auckland to join the Tofua. Mr S. S. George was to join the Maitai as purser to-day. Mr Totan, late second officer of the Pukaki, arrived from Sydney to-day by the Maitai for orders.
