THE KAIPARA REAPPEARS.
* This morning the New Zealand Shipping Company^ large steamer Kaipara, revisited Wellington for the first time after her acoident in Rangitoto Channel, Auckland. There are still about thirty carpenters at work on the vessel repairing the insulation in Nos. 1 and 2 holds, and it is not expected that this work will bo completed for a few days yet. The insulation in No. 3 hold has now been restored, and frozen meat was shipped at Waitara. A rough estimates of tho cost of repairing the insulation is £10,000. From the point of view of the owners of the vessel it would haie been much cheaper to send tho boat to England without frozen cargo and hare tho insulation restored there ; but in view of tho urgent demand for vessels having refrigerated cargo-space it was decided (o proceed with the work in New Zealand. At any rate it is highly j probable that when the Kaipara arrives Home she will be placed in dock again to have certain matters attended to in connection with the shell. The whole work of making the steamer as she was before the mishap has proved to be one of the biggest engineering works evor carried out in New Zealand, and the total cost has been estimated at £30,000. To this must of courso bo added tho loss of freight, wages, and earning power of the ship. It is reported that the pending lawßuit between the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Auckland Harbour Board will probably be settled by private agreement.
