The free and undesirable tenant, for whose welfare the Wellington police 1 evince such an anxiety, has made an j appearance at Petone. In weather such J as now obtains the parks and shrubberies are not conducive- to restful slumber, and the vagrant person, being, in legal phraseology, still without lawful visible means of support, makes instinctively for empty houses, which he has located previously in view of such a contingency as dripping nights. No "tuppence. Three strangers to the district, coming in the category of undesirables, were arraigned before Messrs Inglis and Southgate, J.P.s, to-day at the Petone Court. Each was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond. The accused, Joseph Weslon, William Carthy, and William Wilson (it was stated) were considered undesirable residents of the locality in that two of them had been discovered in one of the Government cottages — apparently .without any monetary liabilities, or without any means of meeting the same even if these existed. Carthy, the youngest of the two, had been up before the court yesterday, when he was merely convicted on condition that he left the district. He had not availed himself of the opportunity, and this morn-ing was sent to safer quarters for three months. Weston (a six months' sentence) need have jio apprehensions as to his board and lodging | during the coming winter, while Wilson was sent to gaol for a month. A nine-roomed t>vo-storied house at the Lower Hutt was destroyed by fire early this morning. The building (owned by Mr. E. G. Pilcher, Wellington) was occupied by Mr. John Fisk. The furniture was insured far £100 in the Royal Office, and the house for £300 in the Commercial Unlpa Offlps*
