The efforts nf the heard) parties proved fruitless. rr&CSS ASSOCIATION.! ALLEGED LIBEL. . WRIT AGAINST MAXAWATU TIMES. PALMERSTOjTn., 15th April. The Manawatu Times has received a writ for £501 damages for alleged libel in connection with tho fire at MilUiand Giorgi's recently. The writ is issued on behalf of Victor M. Braund, and the libel is i-aid to be cootained in tho statement by Superintendent Warner, of the local Fire Brigade, that someone had- interfered with him at the fire. This was published in the report of the fire. A writ for £200 is said to have been issued also agaiust Superintendent Warner. HALLEY'S COMET. AUCKLAND, 15th April. Mr . Stevenson, F.R.A.S., reports taring tten Halley's comet about 5 o'clock this morning. It was seen through clouds, and the increasing twilight' made observation difficult. Mr. Stevenson anticipates that it will be a more conspicuous object in another week, as it it now rapidly approaching of. There is a possibility, he thinks, of the comet's tail reaching to Venus about 2nd May, as the comet will apparently ,«s* near that planet. The comet is to the east of the planet Venus at tbe pre sent time. MISCELLANEOUS. PALMERSTON. 15th April. Intimation has been received from the Governor thai he will pay a final vutt to Psknerston on 13lh May, arriving by the 12.48 p.m. train and leaving again at 3.37 p.m. Steps will be taken by the citizens to signalic* the event. In connection with the rticktngup of Mr. Layburne on Monday night, and Mr. E. Pratt, a. lummom has been issued again*! * local mident on a charge of assault. The matter will be ventilated in the Magistrate* Court.
