During the hearing of evidence in a libel action, Karl May, a septuagenarian millionaire philanthropist, an author of pious books, and a prominent personality in German public life, was proved to be identical with a notorious brigand, who had been sentenced to two terms of imprisonment, and who had committed numerous crimes of violence in Southern Saxony, forty years ago. May collapsed when he heard the cvi dence, and had to be placed under supervision to prevent him committing suicide.
