LABOUR.

| Sx'ATE OF THE MARKET.. " 'oWi^mrifEpoKT: — ■ The Labour Journal for April, IssueH. 1 to-day, gives a detailed statement of the position of the various trades. Following; is a&ummary; — Trade during the month just ended has been fairly good generally, and, qsite up to th* usual standard, of corresponding months -of previous years. Some trade* efcow- a decided improvement, wiiiie others remain steady. Thwe are very few men out of employment., and those that are idle are generally men whoso occupations cause their employment to be of an intermittent nature. Clothing trades hay* been exceedingly busy., partieul*rly so ia the dressmaking departments. One leading firm, state that they found it impossible to get enough hands, and wer» prepared to engage a great msmy mor» competent dres&iu»k«cs, and pay tlie» good wages. The firm concerned desired this to be I»romti in. other districts. Retail trades: Clothing, boot&, Urapery, groceries — Occupiers report that fairly good trade is being done. Unskilled Labour. — Local work ha* been fairly good as compared with tkn same period, last year, but the demand for dairy farm Irands has fallen off t« a large extent, owing to the close of the dairying season. There does not appear to be much tm&kiHod week offering in and about the chy itself, and, as far as can be ascertained, there is no promise of any large works being put in. hand. The la-rge amount recently passed by the State Advances Department to various local bodies for drainage, road, and sewerage works cannot fail to have a favourable effect on labour conditions throughout the Dominion, and it is siiv cerely to be hoped that it will have theeffect of keeping 1 Jaboniers and other* from flocking into the Jargft towns, where there is always a difficulty in winter. It is pleasing to say that during the period very few genuine cases of distrs&s, owing to unemployment:, have come beiore tli6 department's notice, and it wil) be noted that only one-third of the number assisted were married men. Good ploughmen have been in demand during the past month, bub were rather difficult to obtain. Enquiries are *iow coining to hand) for bushfellers and scrub-cut-i ters. One hundred and twenty-five men. were found employment or assisted thereto ; of this number 32 were married men and 93 single, having 107 dependants, 93 being sent to private employment, and 32 to Government works, comprising engineers, engine-drivers, farm hands, painters, plasterers, and labourer*.
