• Sir Ralph and Lady Wilmot arrived from England by the" Turakina to-day. The Hon. D. Buddo left for the South last night. He will return to Wellington early next week. Mr. George Duke, of Duke's Dock, Melbourne, is at present in Wellington. He will shortly leave on a visit to tho South Sea Islands. Mr. D. J. Lundon, of Auckland, lias been appointed clerk of the Supreme Court at Napier vice Mr. J. G. Dunn, who has resigned to join a local firm. Mr. Thos. Watt, a well-known resident of Napier, who has been ill for years, is dead. He arrived in Hawkes Bay in the sixties, and took part in the Maori War. Canon Pascoe, whose nealth has btoken down, is about to leave on a trip to England. During his absence tho Rev. Otto Fitzgerald will be actingTicar at Avonside. A Nelson Press Association telegram states that the funeral of the late Hon. Francis Trask, M.L.C., will take place on Saturday next. It is expected that it will be attended from all parts of the Dominion. A Press Association message etates that the Hon. R. M'Kenzie, Minister of Public Works,- returned to Auckland last night from Whangarci. To-day he will receive a deputation with reference to the North Auckland Main Trunk railway, and to-morrow he will probably visit the goldSelds, and go on to tho Bay of Plenty district. Mr. T. W. M'Kenzie. one of the original trustees of the Wellington Society for the Relief of the Aged Needy, attended the meeting yesterday at which new trustees were elected under the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act of last year. In proposing the appointment of Mr. W. Allan, as chairman, Mr. J. G. W. Aitken paid a tribute to the keen interest Mr. M'Kenzie had always taken in the work of the society Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener did not go ashore from the Mokoia on arrival at lUro tonga from Wellington, but preferred to remain at ease on board the ship. There was a fair swell in tho harbour, but this did not deter a!mo6t all the other passengers from the oppoitunity of viewing the picturesque island settlement, and it was thought- that tho Field-Marshal "feared another demonstration*' from the populace. On arrival at Tahiti the distinguished traveller paid an official visit to the Governor of the French settlement, and then transferred without incident to the Mariposa, which sailed on the 26th March (island time) for San Francisco. This vessel is due. »t San Francisco to-morrow. Another link connecting Tuapeka's past with the present has been snapped by the death of Mr. Archibald M'Kinlay, head of the firm of Herbert and Co., Ltd., general merchants, Lawrence (telegraphs our Dunedin correspondent). For several days deceased was in delicate health, and he died yesterday in his eighty-fourth year. The late Mr. M^Kinlay, a native of Rothesay, Scotland, in the fifties went to Victoria, ■where he followed mining pursuits for some time. Shortly after the outbreak of Gabriel's rush in 1861 he came to Otago, and in partnership with Mr. J F Herbert, of Ardmore Estate, neai Kelso, and ths late Mr. Edward Herbert, started a storekeeping business in Law■pence, in which he retained an unbroken interest up to the last. j
