THE CITY TRAMS.

SATISFACTORY EASTER RETURNS. Tramway returns week by week show that there is every probability of this year's revenue surpassing last year's with an excellent margin to spare. Easter last year fell in April, and that alone is likely to swell the returns to .some degree. The figures for Easter, 1909, are £1898 8s 4d ; for Easter, 1910, £2252 8s; an increase of £353 19s Bd. If the corresponding weeks are compared, tho result is still more striking. For 1909 the figures are : 25th March, £372 19s 74d ; 26th March, £346 Is 84c! ; 27th March, £182 7s 8d; 28th March, £182 7s 8d; 29th March, £303 & lOd. For 1910 the returns for the corresponding week are : 24th March, £408 9s sd ; 25th March, £434 19s 9d ; 26th March, £495 lls 4d; 27th March, £256 2s 5d ; 28th March, £597 5s Id. The totals are £1677 7a 84 d and £2252 8s respectively, showing an increase of £575 0s 3*d. Such arrangements as the City 'Tramway Department has made for the carriage of passengers' luggage on the c.-.is appear to be meeting with the approval of the public. Charges are made as if the luggage was an extra passenger, and co far there has been satisfaction. The difficulty is to find space for the portables, as at present the boxes and Dags and baskets and parcels have to be piled np behind the cars, causing some trouble to passengers when claiming their lvg 1 gage after alighting. The department is considering the best methods of attacking the luggage-on-cars problem, and new developments may follow.
