After 1 a conference at tno White House between Mr. Knox (United States Secretary of State), Mr. Pepper (who recently acted as special American Commissioner to Canada with regard to tariff matters), the Hon. W. S. Fielding, and Mr. G. P. Graham (Minister for Railways and Canals, Canada), Mr. Knox announced that formal negotiations had been concluded, giving assurance that a friendly understanding between the United States and Canada would be reached immediately. MR. FIELDING AND MR. TAFT DINE TOGETHER. THE PAYNE LAV. NEW YORK, 26th March. The Hon. W. S. Fielding (Canadian Minister of Finance) and President Taft dined together at Washington. Opinion in the United States in favour of the Payne law being evaded by a reciprocity treaty is growing. It is stated that such action would diminish British advantages.
