LIBEL ACTION.
CLAIM FOR £5000 DAMAGES. By Telegraph. — Prein Association.— Copyright. SYDNEY, 22nd March. Captain John Strachan, a well-known master mariner, has commenced an action against the proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald claiming £5000 dampger, for libel. The alleged libel is contained in statements said to- have been made by Dr. Inner, Consul-Gen-eral for Germany, and published by the Herald on 17th May last. The article, was headed "Alleged Kidnapping," and referred to the voyage ol Captain Strachan in the ketc-h Envy, charging Strachan with recruiting natives of Tobi Island under promise to return them' to their homes, which promise, it is alleged, he failed to keep. The articles also alleged that Strachan had used efforts to induce the Tobi Islanders to replace the German flag with tho British. Strachan's reply is a denial of the charges. He hacf tak<m Tobi boys for trips in the Envy of their own free will to get knowledge of the world, but had not kidnapped or recruited them, lie also denies the flag incident.
