FOOTBALL.
THE ASSOCIATION GAME. Mr. W. Auld presided at the annual meeting of the Association Football Referees' Association, held last evening at the Trocadero. The report stated that membership was now larger than in any previous year, and very little difficulty had been experienced in providing referees for all matches. An entirely new set of rules had been drawn up, and these would be acted upon this season. The sub-committee — Messrs A. Williams, B. L. Salmon, and W. Wood — constituted for revision of bylaws, reported as follows :—: — 1. That the future examination of proposed new members be by means of verbal questions 'by the examination committee, and illustrated by diagrams where necessary, and that candidates must undergo a test match. 2. That the examination committee consist of four properly-qualified referees, and that at least two examine ' each candidate. i 3. That th.3 examiners report the ] result of all examinations to the secre- I tary within three day?. 4. That it be a recommendation that referees r-uould report to the Referees' Association for misconduct, etc., so that the merits or demerits may be discussed—such discussion not to take place whilethe case is sub judiee. 5. That arrangements be made fo* a regular series of lectures and discussions on at least alternate meetings during the season. 6. That whenever asked, the Referees' Association should supply a referee to give lectures to, boys' teams. 7. That an appeal be made to all chihs to provide linesmen for each competing team, and that such linesmen be asked to attend meetings with a view to proper instruction in the laws of the game. 8. That the appointments committee consist, of three members, and it is considered that the secretary neeel not be a member. 9. That all minutes of each meeting be properly kept and duly confirmed at the next meeting, and that all sub-com-mittee report's be in writing. 10. It is considered tliat a retired players connection with a club should not debar him from ref ereeing in matches where that club is concerned. All these clauses were adopted, and it was also decided that Piule 4 be altered to read : — "An appointment commit- I ice consisting of three members shall' be elected to appoint- referees for matches." , | Election of officers resulted as fotjows : — President, Mr. C. E. Fordham ; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Auld and B. L. Salmon ; secretary. Mr. A. Newbold ; treasurer, Mr. S. F. M'Lean ; management committee, Messrs H. G. Mayer. J. B. Paton, J. Davidson, H. Yeoumans; examination committee, Messrs Salmon, Paton, Mayer, Yeoumans ; appointment committee, Salmon, Mayer, J. Davidson ; delegate- to New Zealand Referees' Association, Mr. W. E. Wells. The newly-formed Wednesday Association enquired whether the association could supply referees for Wednesday matches. Messrs Mayer, Davidson, Ferkins, Anderson, B. L. Salmon, J. J. Roberts, and H. Watern expressed willingness to meet the wishes of the Wednesday players. The Canterbury Rugby Union decided last night to establish a Thursday competition, provided sufficient support .vere forthcoming.
