The Victorian Racing Club has decided to increase the added money of the Melbourne Cup by £1000. The total incrase of stakes for next aeasan's evente amounts to £4000. INTERPRETATION OF A WILL. -■ • ♦ .SUPREME COURT PROCEEDINGS. Argument in the case of Alfred John 1 Litchfield and others v. Charles Manby Walker and others — an originating sum- j mous — was heard before the Chief Jnstico, Sir Robert Stout, sitting in Banco to-day. The case was one that concerned the construction of the will of one Thomas Carter, sheepfarmer, borough, who died on 27th March, 1900, leaving real and personal estate now valued at over £149,000. His will provided that after making provision for his wife and adopted daughter, the remainder of the income was to be divided amongst certain grandchildren of deceased's half-brother and half-sister. Their grandchildren were classed as follow — Those born in testator's lifetime and still alive ; tho6O born in testator's lifetime and now dead ; and those grandchildren born since the death of testator. The question for the decision of the j court was whether the representatives of deceased's grandchildren were entitled to a share in the income ; and whether the grandchildren born since testator's death also were entitled to a share in the income. ! Mr. A. W. Blair appeared for thetrustees, Litchfield, and others. Mr. R. M'Callum (Blenheim), appointed by the court, for the representatives of the, grandchildren born in testator's lrf«--timo and still alive. Mr. J. L. Stout, representing Che Public Trustee, appeared for tho representatives of the, grandchildren horn in testator's lifetime, and since dead. Mr. T. F. Martin appeared for the representatives of those grandchildren hocn since tlte death of testator. Judgment was reserved.
