The Women's Social and Political Union collected £31,686 during the year, 20,000 meetings were held, 294 women arrested, 163 imprisoned, and there were 110 "hunger-strikers," 36 of whom were forcibly fed by order of the prison authorities. The organisation, more correctly called the Women's Freedom League, was formed in 1903. It initiated the policy of intervening at by-elections for the purpose of securing tho defeat of candidates who were followers of a Government hostile to women's fianchise.
