The House Committee on Naval Affairs at Washington has approved of the appropriation of half a million dollars to raif-e the wreck ot the battleship Maine at Havana. The wreck ifc reported to be a menace to navigation. The Maine, a hecond-class battleship, was ordered to proceed to Havana on 24th JiiminiA, Ib9B. Her presence wao undoubtedly reityilvd by the Spaniards, with whom tlio United Slates wan on the point of wnr. She stayed at Havana until, on 15th February, a terrible explosion destroyed her, two officers and 253 men being lout out of her complement of 360. All poM-tble assistance wax rendered by the Spanish nulhoritien, and an enquiry into the cause of the disaster wan at once commenced. The American Commission of Enquiry reported that the explosion was probably caused by a submarine mine. The Spanish authorities, however, lveld that the explosion was due to some internal canoe. From thin point onwards eventu moved swiftly toward* war.
