FREE PLACE PUPILS.
AT THE GIRLS' COLLEGE. A meeting of the Wellington College Board of Governors was held to-day to go into the question of the "free-place" accommodation at the Girls' College. At the last meeting of the board, a committee .was set up to inspect the school and report. This report was submitted to the meeting to-day, al6ng with certain recommendations from the principal (Miss M'Lean), and it was eventually decided to adopt a suggestion by the latter "that applicants with proficiency certificates be admitted," with the limitation "that the total number of pupils does not exceed 230." The question naturally arises : How far will this meet the existing needs ? It is known ( that the applications for admission are far in excess of the accommodation that can be provided. The successful applicants for admission will be cho6en in accordance with the regu- ; lations. Holders of scholarships get first preference, pupils who have qualified for free-places under scholarship examination get second preference, and 1 the successful applicants amongst holders ! of proficiency certificates are decided by [ virtue of the priority of rhei* 1 eppHeu. tigs*
