OVERWORK IN THE NAVY.
Complaint* of excessive overwork in the cruiser squadron are rife, and the recent trouble ok the Sutlej, followed by that on the Leviathan, has created a disagreeable impression in naval circles. The cruiser Leviathan arrived at Plymouth on Monday and reported that during tho cruise serious disaffection had been shown among the crew, who complained of continuous overwork. It was etated that on returning to Gibraltar, late at night after a long day's firing' practice at sea the watch on duty were ordered to holystone the deck. This work not havrnp been satisfactorily done, the order was given for them to do it again. This with one consent they refused to do, and the men assumed a threatening attitude. Nearly the whole of the watch, numbering over 60 men, were placed under arrest. The four ringleaders were subsequently tried by courtmartial and sentenced to two years' imprisonment with dismissal from the service, while 61 other men were awarded punishments ranging from three months' imprisonment to loss of badges. The disaffected men were afterwards distributed among the various vessels of the fleet.
