THE CUP MEETING.

m ~ FINAL GALLOP i AT TRENTHAM. (By Sir Bedivere.) Shortly after midnight' heavy rain commenced to fall, and continued to do so until .about 6 o'clock. The conditions then improved, and a few trainers decided to work their horses before breakfast. Most of the gallops were done on the grass track, and sevsral interesting spins were witnessed. R. J. .Mason was the first to commence, and sent Armlet, who was fretting and perspired between the buttocks as she stepped on to the track, out for a sprint over three furlongs on the grass, a task which she accomplished in 37 l-ssec; she was subsequently trotted once rouud. ; Stewart Waddell, who arrived overnight, allotted has lengthy team, comprised of Perula, Formby (who bears evidence of the racing he has done), Woodhey, Faunus, Ideate (who has a bold style of going), Sir Tristram, and Bollin, moderate tasks, in preparation for more serious business to-morrow. Polyanthus, who stripped well, was given steady exercise, as also was Kopu; each of these horses arrived last night. Ringdove (Ollivev) had a bit the best of Roosevelt (Bennett) in a gallop over a mile, the last seven furlongs of which occupied lmin 37ijsec. Gold Seal (W. Ryan) had Sea Queen (H. Kirk) well beaten, in a sprint over half a mile m 51 2-ssec, a distance over which First Battery showed to better advantage than Sonite. Federal spurted almost half a mile by himself, [ranui had Truganini beaten whila running five furlongs tn imin 7sec, and Lady Reina proved too good for Crown Derby whilst sprinting four furlongs. Effort shaped creditably by running the last five of six furlongs alone in lmin 4 2-ssec, and Sir Frisco was given threequarter-pace work. Tumut (Cairns) and Sunbcnnet (Olliver) finished together under a pull after getting to tba end of five furlongs in lmin ssec. vihauvelin (Trail) hopped off at the mile post, and was picked up by Ukraine after he had gone a furlong. The latter, who had the worst of the weights, got left several lengths, but beat tho Cup candidate, who seems to be a lazy worker, home by a length; Ohauvelin's time for the full journey was lmin 50sec. Waxy ran five furlongs in lmin Bsec, ana Osiris was going belter than Moloch, each being ridden by a light weight, after galloping seveu furlongs in lmin 35sec. In jiew of the 'rough state of the grass track, a number of trainers, including Prossev, Cutts, O'Donnell, Farmer, and Ross, communicated with Mr. Whyte by telpphone, and asked for permission to use the outside of the course proj<er. This was granted, anrl after breakfast the work was well worth witnessing. Ram again commenced to fall about 8.30, and as the last horse had left the track it bpgan to come down solidly, to the accompaujment of thundir. Stepalong and Waiwareware, with lighfayeights up, beat Warlock, who was carrying Cairns, and was right on the outside, by two lengths over half a mile in 51sec. Genius (Douglas) and Tawhaki (Carruthers), who has been having an easy time of it during the past three weeks, were associated over six furlongs, which they traversed in lmin 19sec on the trial gallop. Practically all the other horses worked on the outside of the course proper. Silkweb, Tribulation, and Killaloe were associated in a brush up over four furlongs, at the conclusion of which Tribulation finished a couple of lengths to the good in 51sec. Killaloe, however, was not hustled, and Silkweb, who was carrying a substantial burden, got far the worst of the start. Husbandman was given a nice working gallop over twelve furlongs, the last ten of which he ran in 2min 21sec. Broadsword (F. E. Jones) put up the gallop of the morning by running six furlongs in lmin 16sec; he was? very tired at the finish, however. Paisano strode alon<jj at a sound pace over nine furlongs, and Kilwinning ran seven at a speed he could have increased. T. Quinlivan, jun., made his first appearance, and put Wimmera, Kilindini, and Bally Shannon through easy tasks* and concluded by sending Muskerry five furlongs, which she ran very comfortably in lmin B£eec. Both his Gup and Telegraph Handicap candidates look well. F. l>avis broxight out Bobrihoff, Downfall, Multiple, Chanteuse, and Ambala, and allowed each of them to stride along a bit over the last half-mile after cantering round steadily. He tells me Bobrikoff, who, in company with Downfall, is to go to Australia shortly after the meeting is concluded, may be given a race at Trentham, though the point has not yet been finally decided. One of the most interesting gallops of the morning was that done by All Red (Jenkins), Diabolo (Hatch), and Lady Medallist (Buchanan). Breaking away at the mile post, a strong pace wao set —too strong, seemingly, for Diabolo —and the top-weight and Lady Medallist got home abreast, a couple of lengths to the good, in lmin 45sec. All Red was full of running at the' finish, and his effort was an attractive one. Saxifrage, who makes a noise, beat Tenterhook over half a mile in 49 2-ssec. Vi, Formless, ExpansiSh, and Guinaforte, the two last-named of whom are both affected in the wind, were introduced to trackwatchers, and got through easy tasks. Swimming Belt (Hatch) and Gipsy Belle (Buchanan) finished together, well in front of Lace Collar (ffenkins), after running five furlongs in lmin 4 3-ssec, and White Cockade had Montreal at his mercy whilst getting over the same distance in lmin -3 2-ssec —a smart performance. Merrivonia and Full Sadl did not over exert themselves whilst running six furlongs in company, the last five of which were accounted for in lmin 5 l-ssec. Taskmaster got home half a dozen lengths ahead of Sharpshooter, who swerved towards the inside rails whilst coming down the straight and jumped one of the trestles, after* having run five furlongs at a strong pace. Crucinella, looking in better fig than she did at Awapuni and Bulls, was out doing a * couple of' circuits at a leisurely gait, and Paisano (Buchanan) gave a pleasing display by putting a mile astern comfortably in lmin 46sec. Gold Crest and Taitoko ran six furlongs easily in lmin 21sec, whilst Kina and Pakau accomplished a similar task in lmin 21 3-ssec. Laius brushed home over the last three furlongs ctf a circuit, moving freely.
