SALVAGE OPERATIONS. THE STEAMER NOW AFLOAT. [BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day. Salvage operations on the steamer •Kaipara have progressed satisfactorily. The vessel is now off the bottom, and the pumps are keeping the water in check. A mat 70ft long and 2ft wide placed over the holes proved effective. One orifice existed in the hull lower than the divers were able to locate. Through this hble the water* rushed when the pumps got to work, but it has now been plugged. The Terafthiti's pumps are throwing 15.000 gallons of water an Hour, coping with the inflow. Both holds are free to the second deck. A centrifrugal pump from the Terawhiti and a pulsometer will be fixed. These are expected to make short work of the water, and it is hoped to come up to dock late tonight or to-morrow. The enquiry into the mishap will open before Mr. Kettle, S.M., on 28th January.
