A VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.

FOR ROSENEATH AND ORIENTAL BAY. A volunteer fire brigade was formed last night at a meeting in the Roseneath Schoolroom, held under the auspices of the Roseneath and Oriental Bay Municipal Association. In outlining the proposed formation of the brigade, the chairman (Mr. H. N. Liardet) made mention of the -work of the City Councii towards the establishing o! a brigade for the district. He said that a hose and reel shed had been moved from Berhampore and placed at the corner of Grafton and Crescent-roads. In addition, all necessary equipment, including fire bell and tower, hose reel, hose, and buckets, would shortly be provided. Money had been set apart for the construction of a reservoir on a knob near Mount Victoria, and Parliament had sanctioned the use of surplus money belonging to the Wai-nui-o-mata loan for this work. With the completion of the reservoir the district would have as good a water pressure as was obtainable in Wellington. At present Roseneath had a certain pressure at certain times of the day, and when a fire occurred the water could be concentrated on the Oriental Bay mains. This should be sufficient to suppress hill fires in their earlier stages. A membership of the brigade of 21, including a foreman, was required. The foreman must be an experienced fire fighter. He would be in charge of the plant, and would receive a remuneration of £10 a year. The appointments of foreman, assistant foreman, and secretary would be made subject to the approval of the city brigade. According to Mr. T. W. Ward (secretary of the Ratepayers' Association), the Roseneath reservoir would be commenced as soon as the Nairn-street reservoir was completed. Twenty young men were enrolled as volunteers, and it was decided to elect officers on Friday night. J
