AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL.
A ROWING AND SCULLING ASPECT. . Some prominent officials in amateur rowing have been taking active parts in the controlling of professional sculling. The subject was introduced by Mr. Wl Coffey at last night's meeting of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association. He asked if it was right that a one-time prominent man in Niew Zejalandi amateur cirqles shpuld have occupied the position of starter at the professional handicap in Foxton rerecently. . He believed, v too, that prominent officials in Wanganui amateur rowing circles had supervised the professional sculling hmandicap at Wanganui this month. Mr. E. Hammond mentioned that a ruling had been given that Webb was eligible for membership in the Wanganui Amateur Rowing Club, though not to compete at amateur regattas. That being so, Mr. Hammond did not see how amateur officials could be prevented from officiating at athletic contests. Mr. W. Bridson paid that on the Tham«B, the Parramatta, and in Canada there was close association between amateur and professional scullers: This fact made for clean sport. Mr. M'Lachlan saw no harm in such co-operation. Th© chairman, Mr. M'Villy, said tho question -was a big one ; too important a question to be decided .upon without preliminary notice having been given. Finally it was decided to draft a new clause to be attached to the definition of "amateur," arid,, to submit the sarat for approval or r«j action 1 to the "annual nwtting fif u«l?gatei. " ~ i
