RAID ON PREMISES IN HAININGSTREET.
ALLEGE PLAYING OF PAX-A-POO. ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. Seven policemen got out of a cab _ in Haining-streefc yesterday evening, having successfully eluded the pickets stationed at the two extremities of the street. They divided into two parties, one headed by Sergeant Rutledge and the other by Sergeant Murphy, and dashed into houses Nos. 48 and 53. There was consternation within the raided buildings, where, it is alleged, the game of pak-a-poo was in full swing. Several individuals — both European and Chinese — were arrested, were conducted to the Mount Cook Police Station, where they were formally charged before Mr. G. Lambert, J.P. Being remanded, they were brought before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., to-day, in the Magistrate's Court. Jim Young and Wong Lee were charged that, being the occupiers of Nos. 53 and 48, Haining-street, respectively, they had used the premises as gaming houses. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who appeared for accused, said that he understood the offence the men were charged with was an indictable one, and no asked for a remand. Accused were accordingly remanded till next Thursday. Bail was fixed at £100, and one surety of an equal amount. EUROPEANS FINED. Ten men, old and young, viz., Frederick John White. Peter Cooney, John Segun, Wm. Robertson, James Poynter, Francis Nelson. James Keating, Frederick Williams, -Sue Bun, and Joe Weng, appeared on charges of being found in a common gaming house. All the Europeans, who pleaded guilty, were each fined £2. Penalty for default was fixed at fourteen days imprisonmerit. Accased \verp allowed forty-eight hours to pay the money. The two Chinese — Sue Bun and Joe Wong— pleaded not guilty. They were remanded till next Thuisday, and were allowed bail in itlie amount of £5.
