FOUND DROWNED. [BY TELEGRAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, This Day. The body of Samuel M 'Donald Alexander, aged 58, was found floating in tho harbour under Rattray-street Wharf earl} this morning. Deceased, who lived with his <vifo at Opoho, possessed considerable means. He left his home yesterday morning with the object of purchasing a new home. BURNED TO DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Arthur Way, aged 19, was burned to' death by a fire at Horneman's stables, Cheviot, catty this morning.

Resignations of the following teachers were received, and accepted at this afternoon's meeting of the Wellington Education Board : — Miss A. Gaynor, P.T., Petone; Miss A. Williams,' S.T., Rangi Tamaiti; Miss E. Rankin, S.T., Waimanu. Leave of 'absence was granted Miss P. Carter, assistant, Brooklyn. Tactics adapted to savage warfare are to bo practised at Trentham to-morrow afternoon by the Wellington Rifle Battalion. The battalion will go out by tho train leaving at the ordinary time, accompanied by such other companies of the garrison as may be disposed to go out For the usual week-end rifle shooting matches. The companies forming the battalion will not participate in the shooting, the movements that are to be attempted being ,of a scope that will require the whole of the afternoon to properly develop them. Reporting on quality of hemp turned out during last month, Mr. E. Clifton, Director of Field arid Experimental Farms states that in the Auckland district there was a large increase in tho "common" grade of hemp, as compared with tho gradings of the previous month. "This," he states, "is due to hemp produced to &®ike 'low point fair' not being passed as such by the grader. If our hemp is to hold its proper position in the Home markets this class of fibre should not be exported. In the meantime it may be profitable to the producer, provided it reaches 'fair' grade ; but # in the long run it must have a detrimental effect on the industry." There were 44 bales of fibre condemned at Auckland on account of their being damp inside. Mr. Clark Allan, who was in the Railway Department for many years, died at Palmerston North to-day. The deceased — who was a native of Scotland, was 59 years of age. He was connected with the locomotive branch of the service, and was on the Wellington-Upper Hutt run for a very long time. Miss Amy Currie, M.A., of Wanqaaui, was to-day appointed an assistant mistress at Wellington Girls' College \ice Miss Elsie Johnston (Petone), who had I been appointed, but had declined to take j up the position. Miss Currie was td.icated at Wanganui Girls' College, where she was dux in 1906. She also studied at, tho Wellington- Training College. She gained her M.A. at Victoria College, wich honours in Latin and German. The death occurred at Lansdowne yesterday of Mrs. William Bennett, one of the oldest residents in the district, at the age of 68 (telegraphs our Masterton correspondent). The deceased lady arrived in New Zealand with her parents, tho lato Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Donald, of Mania, in. 1842, by tho sailing ship George Fife. There are now only three survivors in the Dominion who came out in that ship — namely, Archbishop Redwood, Mr. J. Patterson, and Mr. White, of Auckland. Hearing was commenced to-day before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., of the building claim between H. E. Manning, contractor, and R. J. Craddock, engineer — an action for recovery of £191 19s 7d, The claim was" for balance of cost and extras in connection with the erec tion of a five-roomed house at Orientalcreseent, Roseneath. Tho case was adjourned in order to give tho Magistrate opportunity to view the bouse.
