UNITED STATES AND CANADA.

NO TARIFF WAR EXPECTED. B) Telegraph.— Presi Association.— Copyright, (Received December 10, 9 a.m.) OTTAWA, 9tb December. The Canadian Government is satisfied, from President Taft's reference to the maximum clause that no tariff war between the United States and Canada is likely. In his message to Congress, President Taft said he believed that no tariff war ■would result from the application of the maximum and minimum clause of the new tariff, owing to the discretion granted to the executive with regard to its enforcement. Last month it was stated that, with a view of avoiding a tariff war with Canada, the Chairman of tho United. States House Committee on inter-State and foreign commerce, who recently conferred with President Taft, would shortly introduce a Bill in Congress to encourage and .promoter commerce between the United States and the Dominion. Ho recommends postponing the application of tho maximum taril? until 1911, and that Cauadian wood puH and printing paper be admitted free < condition that no restriction is impoc on their export by the Dominion G> vernment. Tha Times's New York correspondent, stated that the proposals indicated a desire at Washington to conciliate Canada. The question was occupying the serious attention of the Tanff Board, which will possibly visit Canada for further investigation.
