BOPE AND TWINE WORKS DESTROYED. LOSS OVER £7000.

FOXTON, This Day. Tho fire which destroyed W. M. Ross and Son's rope and twine works on Saturday afternoon made a hopeless wteek of the factory. The origin of the fire is at present a mystery. The hands ceased work at 11 a.m. and cleared up. The engineer and accountant were there till after 1 o'clock and everything then appeared safe. A carter delivered a load of coke about |2 o'clock, but saw nothing. The first to notice the conflagration Avas the driver of the Levin mail coach. The fire was then showing through the windows. The machinery is destroyed beyond repair. Insurances : — Stock, £5100 (Atlas J33UU), Norwich Union £1100, Guardian, £1000) ; buildings, £1700 (Phoenix £500, Guardian £1000, Yorkshire £200) ; stock £500 (Atlas). The loss is estimated at fully £tOOO The works were very busy and have been working night and day. About 50 hands .will be thrown out of employment. Your representative was Snjormecl by Mr. Alex. Ross, works manager} that steps will be taken to immediately rebuild. Mt. Wm. Ross, manager, was away in Auckland at the time of the outbreak.
