SLANDER IN BUSINESS.
JURY AWARDS £75 DAMAGES. After a hearing which occupied the whole of the day the action for £501 damages for slarider brought by George Lincoln Cole against Stephen Peter Heyns ended in the jury bringing in a verdict for the plaintiff for £75 damages. Mr. Justice Chapman heard the case. Mr. Skerrett, K.C., with, him Mr. D. Jackson, appeared for the plaintiff; Mr. T. M. Wilford, instructed by Mr. F. E. Petherick, for the defendant. Both parties were cap and hat manufacturers, and the slander was alleged to have beei«v£ontained in words uttered by the defendant to an 2mployee of the plaintiff, declaring that the latter could not possibly last three months. It was alleged that the plaintiff had through this suffered serious loss. The jury returned at 6.45 p.m. with a verdict for the plaintiff for £75 damages. Costs were allowed, together with junior counsel's fee, witnesses' expenses, and disbursements.
