PRESENTATION TO HON. T. W. HISLOP.
To-day Mr. H. S. Wardell, on behalf of the committee of the T. W. Hislop Testimonial Fuijd, handed ,Mr. Hislop a cheque representing the amount sent in to the secretary towards the fund, together with the following letter :—: — "The Hon. T. W. Hislop, Wellington. Dear Sir, —Some time since a few citizens suggested *that it would be a fitting thing to present you with some trifle to mark their appreciation of your devotion to their interests- during your term of office as Mayor of the City. It was deemed inadvisable to make an energetic canvass of the city, as the committee knew you would be averse to such a course. The committee hare now brought the movement to a close, and ask your acceptance of the *:companying cheque, which they would like you to devote to some object as would most meet their desire and your personal taste. Assuring you of the best wishes of very many friends, and trusting you may yet be able to further serve the citizen? of Wellington. —l am, etc., "li. S. WARDELL, "For the Hon. T. W. Mr. Hislop, in acknowledging the gift, stated that he had in his mind a fund which he was sure would appeal very much to those who were good enough to subscribe to the testimonial, and •which would later be announced.
Mr. Thomas Palmer Coveney, who ■was for many years in business a& a grocer in Upper Cuba-street, died at his residence at Brooklyn this moraing. The deceased was born in Ireland fiftyfive years ago, and was brought up to the ironmongery business—a lino which he followed for soma tirno after ha arrived in Wellington. He disposed of his grocery store in Cuba street some time ago. The late Mr. Coveney, who was greatly respected, was an enthusiastic Freemason. He was a foundation member of Lodge Leinster, in Wellington, Aid a Pfist Master. He also held office in the Grand Lodge of New Zealand up to the time of his death. He hah lelt a widow and family. Mr. C. A. Seeling, who has been engaged to play for Wigan Northern Union Football Club, leaves for London by the lonic, sailing from Wellington next Thursday.
