A MAORI LAND CLAIM CASE.
Mr. Justice Chapman was occupied for some time with the case of Wild Tahua and Pito Tahua v. the Johnsonville Town Board and the Public Trustee. This was an application for a declaratory order determining whether, upon the construction of the award of the Native Laml Court, directing compensation to be paid to- certain natives in respect of land taken by the Town Board in question for recreation grounds, the 'board ha<l complied with the award by paying to the Public Trustee the sum oi £1000 and issuing to the Public Trustee debentures for the sum of ,£3OOO, payable within ten years from tho issue thereof. A|so, whether tho Native Land Court lias jurisdiction to direct the Public Trustee to pay the plaintiffs the amount duo to them under the award; and, whether the Public Trustee is bound to pay to the plaintiffs the amount directed to be paid. Mr. E. P. Bunny appeared for plaintiffs and Mr. Potherick for defendants. Judgment was reserved.
