The Dunedin Star says that the Portobello fish hatchery seems to be justifying its existence. Five years ago the Government granted this institution an annual subsidy of £250, the term of this grant expiring last March. During that period, besides the valuable information that has been compiled, observations have been made on the spawning, ova and fry of a number of native food fishes. Millions of larvae- of soles, flounders, gurnards, crayfish, and prawn have been liberated in Otago Harbour. The curator now has an assistant, and this has increased the efficiency of the •hatchery. This is apparent at present in the -curator being able to proceed outside the heads to liberate the young crabs and lobsters, giving them a better chance of suiviving than in the harbour. The Lake County Press reports the death of Mr. John Watkins, who was one of the pioneers of the Wakatipu mining district. He went there in the early sixties, and for a time traded on the lake with a small craft.
