VICTORIA COLLEGE.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Victoria College Council met last evening, Mr. J. Graham presiding. The following were also present : — Messrs. E. D. Bell, C. Watson. H. F. Yon Haast, W. 11. Quick, A. R. Meek, C. Wilson, and H. H. Ostler. A letter was received from the secretary of the College Debating Society stating that Mr. J. M. Hogben had been awarded the union prize for oratory. The amount of the prize is £4 7s 6d. The City Council w rote offering shrubs, ornamental trees, etc., to the college authorities for the purpose of beautifying and planting the grounds. It was decided lo thank the corporation for its offer and that the treasurer arrange with' Mr. Glen, as 10 the planting. It wa& added that if the planting could be carried out by the City Council the College Council would meet the expense. The recommendation of the committee that the completion of the flooring of the large room in the basement of the science building be carried out at a cost of about £45, was adopted. The Officers Training Corps wrote requesting the assistance of the council in obtaining leave for all its members who are Civil servants to enable them to attend camp in February. The recommendation of the committee that, the council's co-operation be proffered was adopted. Mr. H. D. Skinner was appointed librarian at a salary of £65. It was recommended (and adopted) that Mr. Cotton's students bo 'provided with stools for use when at microfcopic work. The cost of 12 was assessed at something under £12. Authority was grant-ed the committee to purhcase a roller, at a cost of £2 10s, and to employ a man to cut the ' grass, attend to the hedges, etc. The statements laid before the council shewed that th& total of subscriptions for the building of the new wing now amounted to £^03 15s 6d. The architects report that the building is going on very satisfactorily. The joists for the t\so floors are in, and the walls are nearly up to the roof.
