A steward on the -s.s. 'Arahura last night, shortly after the vessel's, arrival at the wharf, observed a man leaving one of the cabins. He visited the cabin, and discovered a lady's dress basket lying open on the floor, and some of the contents strewn about/ The man — who proved to be a fireman named Michael Butler, belonging to the R.M.S. Turakina — wa's followed up, and arrested. Before Mr. "W. G. Riddell, S.M.,i to-day, he \var> charged with stealing an apron, a lace collarette, and a medal, of a total value of 10s. He pleaded guilty, and was fined 40s, in default, one month's imprisonment. The magistrate also ordered that accused be placed on board his ship on its return to Wellington. Walter Thomas Miles was charged with occasioning a breach of the peace by fighting in Cam-bridge-terrace yesterday. A fine of 40s, in default 14 daj-s' imprisonment, was inflicted. A correspondent, "Guild Stall,"' writes to The Post complaining that when he presented the winning number for a certain article raffled at the recent Ambulance bazaar, he was informed that somebody else had claimed the prize, and had taken it away. The complaint was brought under the notice of one of the bazaar's managers yesterday, and he replied that a mistake might have been made by the confusion of one raffle with another. He could guarantee that "Guild Stall" or any other winner of a prize would get it by supplying the necessary particulars — the i number of the ticket and the number of the book from which the ticket was issued — to the secretary (Miss Nathan, Hobson-street), or Mrs. Firth (Wellington College). By advertising and other means the committee had already endeavoured lo make known the results of the drawings. Regarding the ballot for the silver rose-bowl, for which about 3000 tickets were sold, it was explained that the drawing was conducted by an experienced officer of the Lands Department. Some five or six hundred marbles were used, .and there were six separate drawings^ and finally the winning number came from the six numbers picked out at the preliminary ballots. This method — the one adopted for the State land ballots — assured a fair chance for each ticket. Messrs. W. H. "It is not always the fastest runner or the best footballer that makes the, best fireman," remarked a' delegate atf the conference of fire boards.
