MAN FOUND WOUNDED.

HIS CONDITION SERIOUS. Yesterday ovening an urgent message was received by the police intimating that a man had been found on tho hillside between Kaiwarra and Ngahauranga with a bullet wound in his forehead. A • party proc.eeded to the scene, and returned in about two hours, having found tho man on the summit of a very high spur, about a mile from the Hutt-roa-d, in an unfrequented spot. He vtas removed on a stretcher to the vehicle, and driven direct to the hospital, Leing then in an unconscious condition. TVs morning ho regained consoioujn-j.i-. It was learned that he is a jockey and trainer named Jack Roberts, belonging to Marlborough. Ho had been in Wellington for about a week, and while here had been residing in Cambridge-terrace. He is quite a young man. When picked up last night, an empty whisky flask was found in one of his pockets, and a revolver was beside him. Tho latter had been loaded in two chambers, one of which had been discharged. A quantity of cartridges lay on tho ground near by. The man's, condition is reported to be serious.

The Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce will meet on Friday afternoon and discuss various important matters, including the pro,posed primage duty. The police are at present actively waging a- campaign against vagrants and loafers of the city. Yesterday two of the former class were brought before the magistrate, who sentenced them to six months' and three months' imprisonment respectively. To-day four more were before the court, one being a female. Daniel Hannon — a young man — pleaded guilty to the charge of being" an idle and disorderly person. There were numerous convictions against him. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed. Two of the other accused were similarly dealt with, and the fourth wan convicted*
