CIVIL" BUSINESS. In the Magistrate's Court to-day* Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., gave judgment for plaintiffs in the following undefended cases : — Richardson' and Sons v. Canning and Co., '£7 10s, costs £1 3s fid; George, Doughty dnd Co. v. Thomas E. Tail, £8 18s 3d, costs £1 3s 6d; J. E. Butler, Ltd. v. Jas. Martin, £9 6s 4d, costs 8s ; Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. v. Percy E. Baldwin, £6 4s 9d, costs 18s 6d; City Council v. W. H. Newberry, £5 13s 6d, costs 8s; same v. John James O'Brien, £5 4s lid, costs 9s. In the judgment summons case Wm. Moffatt v-. John William Mackuy, a debt of £33 3s, no order .was made.

To-morrow evening a concert will be given in the Methodist Schoolroom, Alolesworth-street. The programme is advertised in this issue. Twenty-two oi the Tarakina's passengers from London to-day were assisted. The number was made up of nine men, ten women, and three # children. Twelve of the adults were approved by the High Commissioner, and each' brings capital ranging from £25 to £400. The assisted passengers include four farmers, two farm labourers, and five domestics. It has been arranged by the Wellington Presbytery that services shall be held at Plimmerton during the summer months. The matter was left in charge of the Rev. R. Inglis and the session of Onslow, along with the. Church Extension Committee. The hearing of the case Liggins and Froggatt against Shaw was concluded io-day in the Magistrate's Court. The plaintiffs are manufacturers carrying on business in England, and the defendant is a storekeeper at Masterton. The defendant ordered goods from tho plaintiffs through an indenting 'firm, but declined to accept aud pay for theia. upon arrival in New Zealand. Various defences of a technical nature were set. up, and Dr. M'Arthur, S.M./iebervbl judgment. The amount involved is £89 2s. Mr. Dix appeared for claimants and Mr. Cullen, of Masterton, for defendant. The following nominations have been received for the seat on the Hutt Kiver Board, vacated by Mr. A. Peters :—: — Mr. F. do J. Clere, nominated by Messrs. \V. G. Foster and C. F. Stewart ; Mr. F. J. Pinnj', nominated by Messrs J. Waugh, G. Cudby, P. Casey, and W. H. Russell. The election has been fixed for Tuesday next, 23rd inst. Puponga coal is described as a clean, quick-lighting coal, which gives a clear fire and leaves no cinders. Full stocks arc held by all dealers. Mrs. W. H. Carey notifies in our advertising columns that she will let or lease a private hotel in Westport. Mcssra. W. H. Morrah and Co. will hold an auction sale of furniture and effects on tha premises, No. 9+ Dixon-street, tomorrow afternoon. A. L. Wilson and Co. advertise particulars of a sale of furniture, including piano, at their rooms to-morrow, at 1.30 o'clock, when the contents of a 7-roomed house will be disposed of. At 2.30 the same firm will offer a lino of jewellery and drapery, to clear up a stock. On Thursday, at the residence of Mr. F. Martin, 19, Hankey-strcet, the contents of an 8-roomed residence, also piano, will be offered by auction. On Friday, at 11 o'clock, at the yard of Messrs. Adams and Smart, 13, Martin-street, their plant of building and contracting requisites will be offered. In the afternoon of the same day, the firm will sell, on behalf of a lady who is giving up housekeeping, at the premises, 217, Tinakori-road, the contents of her 7-roomed residence, including piano. On Wednesday evening, at tho Unitarian Freo Church, Ingestre-strcet, a lecture on the Right Hon. D. Lloyd-George. M.P. (his life, eloquence, and work) will -be delivered by Dr. W. Tudor Jones. Dr. Jones ha 3 possessed exceptional achantagos in the past of studying the character of the subject. Tho Hon. T s \V, Hielop will preside.
