B<r. A. W. Izard, of Wellington, waa a passenger from London by the Tura-» kina to-day. Major Hutton and Captain Seddon were passengers from Lyttelton by thq Mararoa this morning. Mr. W. A. Flavell, manager of the Westport Coal Company in Wellington, left tor the West Coast last night. Mr. .Gifford Marshall, solicitor, of Wanganui, who has been on a visit to Great Britain, returned by the Tura-i kina to-day. Mr. Thomas CJrwin was last night elected vice-president of the Wellington branch of his Majesty's Royal Association of Veterans. Mr. Will Crooks, Labour M.P. tor, Woolwich, England, and Mrs. Crooks, will arrive in Wellington from Rotorua next Thursday, 25th inst. Nurse A. Hulme has been appointed a sister on the Wellington Hospital nursing staff, in place of Sister Mabel Williams, who has resigned from fcho staff. Mr Charles V. Houghton, manager for the New Zealand Shipping Company at Auckland, returned to New Zealand by, the Turakina to-day, accompanied by, Mrs. and Miss ' Houghton. Messrs. W. Lane, of the literary staff of the New Zealand Herald, and L. W. Ashbolt, of the managerial staff of Pearson's Proprietary, Ltd., Melbourne, are on a visit to Wellington. At to-day's meeting of the .Wellington Presbytery, the Rev. W. J. Comria \y,as~ appointed Moderator for the ensuing six months. Mr Comrie will assume office at the next general meeting of the Presbytery. Mr. Win. Evans, deputy-manager of Ralph's coal mine, at Huntly, has died through an affection of the heart, caused through an accident at the mine some time ago. He was fifty yeara of age, and a married man with a family. A Press Association message from Auckland states that the Auckland University has awarded the following scholarships :— Gillies Scholarship, H. C. Johnson, Carterton; Sinclair Scholarship, Hilda Adlington, Auckland ; Sir George Grey Scholarship, W. A. Gray, Auckland. Mr. W. Gillanders, 8.A., who some two and a half years ago was appointed National Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association of Australia, has retired from that position, and entered * into partnership with Mr. Richardson, of Melbourne, in a land and property agency. Mr Gillanders was well known in Wellington football circles, i Mr. Nicholas Irvine Hunt, formerly a well-known resident of Cambridge, but who for several years has lived on an estate he purchased in the King Country, met with an accident at Te Kuiti on Saturday afternoon. He was found in a paddock in an unconscious state, having apparently been thrown from his horse, the animal having returned home riderless. He succumbed to his injuries without recovering consciousness. The late Mr. Hunt was a. brother-in-law of Messrs. J. W. and E. N. Souter, and formerly managed the Gorton Estate near Cambridge. The funeral of the late Mr. Joseph Hicks, chief mechanical engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board, took place this morning, and was largely attended. The Harbour Board was represented by Messrs. R. Fletcher (member), H. E. Nicholls (secretary), J. W. Marchbanks (engineer), and A. V. Hales Monro (wharfinger), Captain Johnson (harbourmaster), and employees from all its departments. Others present included Mr. W. Ferguson (ex-secretary and engineer), W. Prince (formerly wharfinger), about 150 Freemasons. The Rev. James Paterson read the Presbyterian burial service, and the Masonic service was conducted, by Bros. John Tait, W.M.. of Lodge Waterloo, and Bro. James Godber, P.M.
