CLERKS IN MERCANTILE OFFICES.
THE SUGGESTED UNION. [BY TELEGEAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Comparatively little has been done in the direction of organising the clerks in mercantile offices in Ohristchurch, .with, a view to the formation of an industrial union, under the provisions of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act. The matter has been taken up by 7 the Executive of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, and it has communicated with the organisation of a similar nature in Sydney, which has a membership of some 600. Information with regard to its constitution was received by ;tho executive at its meeting on Saturday evening. No systematic canvass of the clerks of the city has yet been made, though a number of individuals have been consulted by members of the executive. It seems that there is some ques.whether mercantile clerks would not come within the classification of shops and'offices assistants. A meeting of the Executive of the Trades and Labour Council will be held on Thursday evening, when the matter ■will be further considered.
