Charges of being idle and disorderly persons, preferred against Charles Cannon, Claude Retter, and Ettie White, with many aliases, resulted in the two first-mentioned accused being sentenced to three months' imprisonment at the Police Court yesterday. The woman was remanded. The police evidence showed that the accused, who lived together, habitually consorted with thieves, and a letter written by Cannon to James Riley, who was charged with theft at Auckland, contained the following passage : "This is the placa for the likes of you and me. There are* .'shickers' lying about all over the place. About 300 men get paid on Friday, and they have about J3500 between them, so if you were here we would do nothing." [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] SHOW EXHIBITS. CHRISTCHURCH, 18th October. At the last conference of Agricultural and Pastoral Associations of New Zealand a remit from Otago was adopted that all exhibits consigned to a/ show should without any certificates be carried at quarter ratss, and that all such exhibits or part thereof, if returned to original sending station within a certain time, be also charged quarter rate, returning stock to be consigned by tho • association at whose show the stock wa-s exhibited, who would be responsible to tho Railway Department that only the original exhibits or part thereof were returned. The matter was brought under the notice of the Minister of Railways, and a. message has been raceived by the president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association from Mr. R. Heaton Rhodes, M.P., that the Minister regrets he cannot see his way to give effect to the recommend/ition. THE CHRISTCHURCH MOTOR FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, 18th October. A press representative asked Inspector Gillies to-day if there was any news regarding the motor car fatality, and he replied, "No, you will have to wait s bil." It is understood the papers connected ■with the fatality have been forwarded to the Minister of Justice. It is understood also that the officer commanding the Canterbury volunteer and militia district is in communication with the Chief of the General Staff (Colonel Bobin, C.8.) on the subject of holding a military court to enquire into the circumstances connected with the fatality, the late Captain Pavitt having 'been on duty at the time of his death. His relatives will, ifc is stated, receive compensation from the Defence Department, but the amount is not known. DAMAGE BY FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, 18th October. At 6.45 this morning, a six-roomed dwemng at Papanui, owned by Mrs. Kate Hannibal, was destroyed by fire. The house \ras insured in the Npv Zealand Insurance Company for £200, and furniture for £50. A defective chimney If believed to have been the cause of the outbreak. LAND FOR SETTLEMENT. CHF-ISTCH.UP..CH. 18th October. The Commissioner nf Crown Lands anticipates that the Tyvil Estate, between Bankside and Rakaia, will be available for ballot early in December. The survey of the estate has been completed, and plans are now being made. UNIVERSAL MILITARY TRAINING. CHRISTCHURCH, 18th October. The Christchurch City Council unoni-
mously passed the following resolution this evening : — "That this council is of opinion that the time has arrived when universal military . training should be adopted in the Dominion. ' Copies of the resolution are to be sent to the Prime Minister, and to all municipal councils in the Dominion.
