THE TURF.

THE WELLINGTON MEETING. NOTE.S AND COMMENTS Everything points to fine weather for the opening of the season at Trentham to-morrow. The bright sunshine of yesterday after the recent wet weather has had a most beneficial effect on the course proper, also the enclosures. With the exception of the Hurdles, the opening event on the programme, the fields throughout are good. Rawhetu ha& not been brought down to the meeting, and there will be only four runners for the obstacle event. ' Wirral shaped well in a gallop with Tauina this morning. Waipunehu scored a, long overdue •win ait Hastings. Martyrium shaned well in the race Waipunehu won, but dis" appointed her connections at the Park. She will be ridden by Tartar Julian. Cohort made a satisfactory first appearance at Otaki. Ho will again bQ ridden by H. Futcher. Dolce's name was omitted from the list of acceptors that appeared in the local papers. She has 8.11 in the event named. Mr. Goodwin brought the mare down on Monday "night, and intends going on to Christchurch for the Maiden Plate. All the acceptors for the race have put in an appearance at headquarters, except- Latchet and Chameleon (Multiform — St. Ouida). F. D. Jones will bo on Miscast, and probably Hector Gray will be on the Kararau representative (Deadless). Rangikapun is an unlikely starter. C. Pritchard's . team will consist of Penates, Naumai, Miscast, and Bravery. Milan and Magneto have recent form to recommend them. The field for the Shorts Handicap includes three of C. 'Pritchard's team (Pehates, Naumai, and Mon Ami), and two from Porirua (Gipsy Belle and Simplex). Gipsy Bello and St. Bill have done good truck work. Merrie Zealand, who will be reserved for the Wainui Handicap, will probably be the only withdrawal from the Welter Handicap. The list of starters and ridcra will be as follow : — All Red, 9.8 (C. Jenkins); Sir Frisco, 8.13 (R^ Hatch); Sandstream, 8.8 (S. Reid) ; Sir Tristram, 8.8 (F. D. Jones); Muskerry, 8.6 (H. Price); Elysian, 7.11 (H. Gray); Flitaway, 7.11 (F. E- Jones) ; Aberbrothock, 7.7 (T. N. Ayre); Swimming Belt, 7.6 (L. Traile); Moloch, 7.5 (W. H. M'Kay) ; King Post, 7.2 (T. Carroll). The Held includes Swimming Belt, winner of the race last year, Sandstream, who ran a solid mile and' a quarter on the second day of the Hawkes Baymeeting,! and Aberbrothock, a winner at Horowhenua and Napier Park. Probably the mo&t brilliant performer in the field is Muskerry, winner of the Feilding Manchester Handicap and W.R.C. Handicap. Elysian put up a first-class performance in the Hawses Bay Guineas, and as Hector Gray is up to date head of the list of winning riders, the Soult colt -will probably be well supported. All the Spring Selling Plate entrants have arrived, except Moreykoff (Menschikoff—Kilmorey). The field includes Bravery and Sea ■ Queen, winners at Lowe Valley. ' All the youngsters left 'in the Wellesley Stakes will go to the post except Turna, Enyo, and Warsong. The probables include previous winners in King Soult, Formby, Kohnoor, and Win.ning. Post. Formby. sprinted three furlongs in 38is.ee this morning, and Master Laddo the same distance in a tick over 39sec. The latter will be ridden by S. Reid, while Winning Post, who succeeded the second day of the Hastings meeting, will have the services of C. Jenkins. 0. Jenkins will ride Diabolo in the Wainui Handicap, and H. Telford Tauira. J. W. Lowe has three in the race : Effort, Longner and Iney. Merrie Zealand is looking well. In the working gallop Diabolo has been pitted against All Red, and has done well. San Fernando showed winning form last week at Otaki, and if in galloping humour will make matters extremely interesting. In a gallop with King Post on the tracks Merrivonia was "seen to advantage. The" Final Scurry, field includes the well-bred Soprano (Menschikoff — Cissy). Nukuhau "Had not put in an "appearance at the course this morning. F. Tilley only brought Milan and Master Laddo from Fordell. Lady Lucy joins her Stable mates after the Wellington meeting, and goes on to Christchurch with them, H. Cairns was at Trentham this morning, having returned _ from Australia via Auckland yesterday afternoon. The horseman named will ride "Waipunehu in the Hurdles, and Merrie Zealand in the Wainui Handicap. Mr. J. a liuckland's two-year-old filly Dearest (Soult — Lady Hester) was brought across from Porirua with Mr. Prosser's team. She is not engaged at the coming meeting. Master Soult was treated by the vet yesterday, and is improving, but not as quickly as his trainer would like.. It is hoped that he may be able to take exerGise by the end of the week. C. Pritchard informed "The Spade" yesterday that he had ,a similar case "vifch Penates, who had^a bad time. In addition to riding the Karamu horses when the weights suit, F. D. Jones will be upon Miscast and Mania to-morrow. M. T. M'Grath left Sydney on Saturday last on the return trip with Tumut and Osiris. He arrives to-mor-row. F. D. Jones, C. Jenkins, W. Young, and S. Reid, have been going "short," and /have been regular attendants at the Turkish baths the last few days. The Hutt-trained horses will go up to Trentham on Wednesday morning. F. Higgott takes San Fernando, Undecided, Gold Top, and Marengo. R. Hatch will have the mount on all except Marengo. T. Pritchard came up from the South on Sunday. V. Cotton will ride Whatakura at the North Otago meeting. Pritchard will ride Penates in the Stewards. It is understood A. Oliver is coming back in time to ride North-East in the same race. This morning Flitaway and Taskmaster ran a mile in lhiin 48sec, Sir Tristram and Woodhey seven furlongs in lmin 37£ sec, Diabolo and AH Red a mile in lmin 50sec, Diamond Star and Bollin a mile in lmin 51sec, Merrivonia and King Post seven furlongs in lmin 37sec, Elysian and First Gun a mil* in lmin 54 2-ssec\ Geo.
