During the year strenuous efforts have been put forth by the local branch of the Y.W.C.A. to raise a fund for the erection of a young woman's hostel. The amount collected up to date for this work is £332 Os 9d while a "brick scheme" is iv active development. By meaus of this scheme it is hoped lo realise another £500 at least. After reading the results of tests of the dust taken at various times and places in Chicago streets, one may see added horrors in the act of the unkind shopman whose broom brings up unsavoury clouds on the footpaths of Wei lington in the mornings. A disc, 3|in in diameter, had 941 living germs deposited on it when placed at a Chicago street corner at a normal time. The same disc, when set by a cross street after municipal employees had been sweep-ing the pavement, attracted a population of 5&10 microbes. In New York interesting experiments have been tried with an automatic dust collector (a special plate fixed at tho bottom of a box) for the purpose of determining the "bacteria, content of a sample. One col'leetion revealed 320 distinct colonies* of bacteria, and each test revealed the presence of tubercular germs. "By means of these dust collectors," states an American paper, "street cleaning can be put on a more scientific basis, for when it. is reported that a certain disease is prevalent in any district of a city, the street-cleaning department, by using this dust collector, may be enabled to discover the source of the epidemic." An unusual application was made to the Benevolent Institution to-day, when a clergyman applied for assistance on account of his wife and family and himself. His debts (£3O) -paid ; food for three months; and £50 for publishing a book, and a passage back to England. He asked that he had been "left in the lurch. by a particular denomination, of which he -was a member. -He was now penniless, and had, until recently, been living -for three months in a furnished Tionsc, for which he had paid no rent. The board relieved the case in the ordinary way. Members of the Federated Cooks* and Stewards' Union of New Zealand are reminded by advertisement of a general meeting to bo hold to-morrow in the union'i rooms, Brandon-street, at 2.30 pm.
