COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

Andrew Paulson, in the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., was charged with the theft of a gold watch and chain, a cheque, and some money, of a total value of £30, from the bedroom of Eva Haggitt in the Hotel Cecil. Informant stated that on retiring she did not lock her bedroom door. She placed the articled mentioned on the dressing-table, they were missing the next morning. It was also stated that accused was staying in the hotel. The watch and chain were subsequently recovered from a pawn-shop. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, said that he had been drinking heavily with a stranger. The latter gave him a watch and chain to dispose of, which after some difficulty he placed with a second-hand dealer. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. The second charge was that he«sfcole a rug at Martinbbrough, belonging to Timothy Donovan. Accused pleaded not guilty. ' Chief-Detective Broberg stated that Paulson had been convicted of theft on previous occasions. In fact he was now serving an eighteen months' sentence m Auckland for threei such offences. The Magistrate convicted accused, and sentenced him to one month's imprisonment.
