•LARGE INCREASE FOR AUGUST. The leaflet compiled from Customs returns of exports from all ports of- the Dominion, and issued by the Industries and Commerce Department, shows an increase of values for the month of August of £114,586, as compared with August, 1908. The different items and their values, with the figures for August, 1908, are as follow :—

Last evening, the conference of the New Zealand Fruit Brokers' Federation concluded with a supper given by Wellington members of the federation to the visiting delegates. The president (Mr. F. Townsend) was in the chair. In appreciation of his services as secretary, Mr. D. F. Skinner was the recipient of a handsome case of cutlery. It was decided to hold the next annual conference in Auckland in September. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., Guy Cockburn sued A. F. Roy for possession of a number of articles of furniture, or in the alternative £9. Plaintiff further claimed £2 10s for wrongful detention. Defendant stated that he was willing to give up the goods when he received the authority to do so. Judgment was given for possession of the goods or £4. Costs vrere assessed at £1 4s. Mr. Kirkcaldie appeared for plaintiff and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendant. The Fire Brigade received a call at about half past one o'clock this afternoon to No. 148, Willis-street, the soot in one of the chimneys of which had ignited. The blaze was quickly suppressed by the firemen. The Dominion Convention of the New Zealand Christian Endeavour Union will be continued to-night, in the Town Hall. The evening is to be devoted to the juniors, who will give a demonstration entitled "Christian Endeavour in New Zealand." The meeting promises to be of interest, especially as it will be conducted entirely by the junior department. Messrs. Levien, Shallcrass and Co. will hold a sale of furniture at the Central Auction Rooms to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. The same firm advertise a clearing sale'to be held on the premises, No. 93, Tinakori-road, on Friday after""noon, "commencing at 1 o'clock. A "benefit dance" will bo held in the " Victoria .Hall on Friday evening. Mr. Harry A. Shepherd's change advertisement appears in this issue. Marked plans of Hataitai and Tirohanga may be obtained on application, at the office, Norwich Chambers, Customhouse«guay.
