THE LATE MRS. HISLOP.

The universal respect and esteem ill which the late Mrs. Hislop was held was fully shown by the large and representative attendance at her funeral this afternoon. The cortege was fixed to leave her late residence in Salamancaroad at 2.15, but long before that time there was a gathering of sympathetic friends and the general public, on foot and in cabs, which rendered locomotion a matter of considerable difficulty. Since the announcement of the death of Mrs. Hislop, the family has received a very large number of messages of condolence from people in all parts of the Dominion, representing all classes and all sections of society, and the enormous number of floral tributes sent by all the associations with which the deceased lady had been connected, and from other public and private sources, constituted an additional tribute to the high esteem in which she was held and to the general and widespread regret at her decease. The pall-bearers were Dr. W. Hislop (son), Dr. Shand and Mr. C. J. Cooper , (sons-in-law) and Mr. F. Hawthorne (cousin), and the chief mourners were the Hon. T. W. Hislop, Mr. Geo. Hislop, and Mr. J. Morton), the City Electrical Engineer (Mr. Stuart Richardson), and the City Treasurer (Mr. C. Collins) were the official representatives of the municipality of which the Hon. T. W. Hislop was for several years the head, and several members of the general staff of the Corporation were also present. Among the large gathering were also Mother Mary Joseph Aubert, the Hon. Dr. Findlay, the Hon. T. Mackenzie, Mr. F. D. Waldegrave (Under-Secretary for Justice), Mr. Martin Chapman, K.C., Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C., Rev. H. Van Staveren, Mr. W. Fraser, M.P., Mr. J. K. Heyes (Valuer-General), Mr. H. Baillie (Chief Librarian), and Messrs. A. S. Biss, M. Murdoch, J. Godber, and G: Winder (ex-councillors), J. M'Lellan, J. Hutchens, John Duthie, J. H. B. Coates, J. G. W. Aitken, A. M. Smith, Martin Kennedy, T. F. Martin, W. M. Hannay, P. M'Ardle, G. Hogben (Inspector-Gen-eral of Schools), W. Watson, E. J. Yon Dadelszen, W. A. Quick, A. Gray, J. M. Butt, A. H. Tudor Jones officiated at the graveside at Karori. At the Benevolent Trustees' meeting to-day appreciation was expressed at the services that the late Mrs. Hislop had rendered to the poor of the city for so many years, and the trustees decided to forward their condolences to the Hon. T. W. Hislop. The motion was made by Rev. W. A. Evans, seconded by the acting-chairman, Mr. R. W. Short, and passed by the trustees standing.
