THE UNIVERSITIES' GAME. WIN FOR.SYDNEY.
[BI TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL TO THE POST.] DUNEDIN, 4th September. The game between the Sydney and New Zealand Universities was played in the Caledonian ground, which was in good order. A moderate breeze blew down the ground. New Zealand played with it in the first spell. In the first few minutes Sydney's heavier forwards looked like running over the New Zealand pack, and when the New Zealand backs cleared their lines by kicking, Lane, the Sydney full-back, was very safe in taking the ball and returning. About the first bit of clever play by New Zealand was some- neat dribbling by Seed, who was playing well at wing forward. He worked across goal, and sent a foot pass to Mackenzie on the wing. Mackenzie passed to Reid, who 1 lost the ball over the line, and Sydney wera just able to force in time." Towards the end of the spell, a good dash down midfield by Metcalfe took play into {New Zealand's twenty-fives, but a j long kick down the wind relieved. A : very rugged spell ended with no "score. Half way through the spell Reynolds, the Sydney captain, was injured, and was replaced by Lindemann. New Zealand started* off the second spell with attempted passing in Sydney's twenty-fives, but Browning intercepted, and dribbled down the middle of the field. However, Hay defended resolutely. The game was still full of mistakes, tut after a quarter of an hour Sydney started passing from the line-out, and the ball went at great speed, and without a mistake, to Pockley, on the other wing, and he scored a pretty try. Hughes failed to convert from a moderate angle. Phillips put in an excellent run for New Zealand, but within a few minutes Sydney scored again. The ball came out at the side of a scrum in New Zealand's twenty-fives. A forward picked up, and passed to Fisher, who broke through the defence and scored near the corner. This try was also unconverted. Sydney were unfortunate in the matte? of injuries, as Fisher was knocked out soon after, and had to leave the field temporarily. Two or three* Sydney shots from the field missed the opening. At last New Zealand took play beyond half-way? and started passing. It was wild, and lost them much ground, and Sydnisy, profiting by their mistakes, put in a passing rush, which ended in Lane scoring near the posts. Fisher converted, and a few minutes later he potted a pretty goal from a considerable angle. New Zealand came away with a. fine dash. Ongley broke away at the twentyfives, ran to the full-back, and r passed to Dansey, who scored under the posts. He converted the try. Towards the finish the New Zealand backs showed their best play of the day, Ongley and Dansey being very prominent. The result was :—: — Sydney 15 •New Zealand 5 Mr. W. Wilson was a good referee.
