SATURDAY'S GAMES. WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY.
GOOD WIN FOR WELLINGTON. [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, 4th September. Canterbury and Wellington met today in fine weather. Wellington started with the wind. Even play for five minutes, in which Roberts showed out, saw Canterbury with a slight disadvantage, owing to a cross-wind against them. Within five minutes of the start, the Canterbury forwards made a determined rush to the Wellington line, and from a scrum, Burns dodged cleverly, and passed to Westoli, who got over, but failed to convert. Erratic passing lost Wellington good opportunities, and Mitchinson failed with a likely penalty near the Canterbury line. Canterbury also looked like scoring immediately afterwards, and Wellington forced, but the Wellington forwards soon came back, and Green made a fine dash, and passed to Walsh, who scored at the corner. Roberts failed to convert. Wellington 3 Canterbury 3 Bad passing by Canterbury nullified their work in the scrums. Evenson broke through, and made a fine run. Canterbury were then besieged for five minutes, and a magnificent rush between M'Leod, Green, and Walsh cul-minated-in a fine score at the corner, from which Roberts landed a good goal. Further Canterbury passing was spoiled by knock-ons, and then Evenson kicked down the field. Avery and "Rangi" Wilson followed 'up, and beat Doell, Wilson-scoring easily. The try was not converted. Wellington 11 Canterbury 3 This score was registered in thirty minutes' play, and for the rest of the spell Wellington were mostly in the home twenty-five, but no further score was registered. Wellington still attacked in the second spell, the forwards going with much dash in the loose, and Canterbury forced in the first five minutes. Wellington hooked the ball regularly, and hacl Canterbury defending all of the first fifteen minutes, both wing threequarters having good chances that were only foiled by solid tadding. Eventually a good forward rush by Canterbury got play fairly into the Wellington twenty-five. From a scrum Burns sent a long pass to Shanks, who ran to the line,' and gave Murray a try at the corner, Weston failing to convert. "Rangi" Wilson led numerous Wellington rushes to the Canterbury twentyfive, and the rushing forwards hooked the ball often enough to give the backs numerous opening. From good work by M'Kellar, Roberts, and Evenson Canterbury were forced, and not long afterwards a nice concerted movement between M'Kellar, Green, Mitchinson, and Evenson gave the last-named an apparently certain try which Fryer just stopped. Weston then had a kick at goal from a penalty at about halfway, but it went under, and after even plary Evenson had a good pot at goal which fell short. Tim 6 was then called. The final score was Wellington , „,. 11 Canterbury 6 . Mr. F. T. Evans was referee.
