PETONE AND HUTT. LOWER HUTT COURT.
Mainly civil business was dealt with at this morning's sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court. Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., with him Mr. John Cudby (sen.), J.P., presided. MAINTENANCE. Applications for maintenance orders were made by Jane Howland against her husband, William B. Howland, and Phoebe Cooley against her husband, Harry Cooley. The applications were adjourned until 4th October. Mrs. B. Guilfoyle appeared in support of an application for maintenance from her son, James Guilfoyle. Defendant, who did not appear, * was ordered to contribute 5s a week, first payment to be made on 13th September. UNDEFENDED CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given in the following civil caws : — Commissioner of Taxes v. George J. Mitchell, £1 0s 6d, with costs 10s; Hutt Valley Timber Company v. H. H. Knight, £5, with costs 15s 6d; J. Barnett v. William Cudby, £i 6s, with costs ss. CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. Some time was occupied in the hearing of a case in which F. G. Russell, dairyman, Alicetown, sued William Ward, employee at Petone Railway Workshops, for the sum of £34 17s 6d, damages for personal injuries (assault) and damages to a bicycle, alleged to have been done by defendant. According to plaintiff, for whom Mr. O'Leary appeared, Ward had, without provocation, assaulted him early one morning, while witness was riding his bicycle. Ward then rode away on his (witness's cycle). Subsequently the machine was found iii the vicinity of the riverbank by Constable M'Kenzie, with the tyres ripped, and generally in a damaged condition. Previous to this, Ward and informant had quarrelled. The defence", for whom Mr. Ayson appeared, was a complete denial of any knowledge of the assault. Judgment was for defendant, with costs. PETONE NAVALS. On Saturday evening last, members of the Petone Navals tendered a complimentary social to chief-petty officer L. Parrant. Mr. Parrant, who is resigning after having served in the company for the past twenty-three years, was presented by Capt. Ellis, on behalf of the corps, with a set of silver cutlery. Capt. Ellis made mention of the highly valuable and' efficient services rendered by the retiring officer, who, he said, was esteemed by both officers and men. Mr. Parrant suitably responded, and was accorded a popular ovation. During the evening a musical programme was contributed to by Messrs. Nolan, Smart, Brace, Jim Ryan, Ap"pleyard, Dawson, Blake, and others. W.C.T.U. Mrs. K. L. Stevenson gave a lecture to ah appreciative audience at the Town Hall, Lower Hutt, on Saturday night. Mrs. Boxall, the district president, introduced the speaker, who was welcomed heartily, while the union members gave the "White Salute." From beginning to finish one was struck with the lecturer's depth of knowledge and thorough grasp of her subject. Miss Knight pre-* sided at the piano, and Mrs. M'Caw, the local president, thanked Mrs. Stevenson.
